Selection Guidlines

  1. Scholarship: A list of all 10 & 11 grade students who meet the academic requirement of a minimum 3.5000 unrounded, weighted grade point average is compiled in the third quarter of each school year.
  1. Character: During the selection process, the disciplinary records of the candidates are checked against membership criteria. Nominees who have been caught lying to school personnel, cheating, committing plagiarism or forgery, or who have been disciplined for any Level Two or Level Three infraction as described on the Secondary and Adult Education Student Discipline Referral and Coding Form, District School Board of Pasco County during the current nomination period (August – March) will be immediately dropped from consideration for National Honor Society membership.  Students with more than one Level 1 infraction will be subject to review and may be excluded from consideration. Each referral written during other years will result in a negative effect on the character of the candidate. Any sophomore excluded from consideration by one or more of the provisions described in the previous sentence will become re-eligible for N.H.S. membership during the next nomination period and the infractions(s) that led to the exclusion will be deleted from that student’s new nomination records. The J.W. Mitchell High School Faculty is asked to score the candidates with regards to character. Faculty members who have knowledge of behavior(s) that conflict with the standards of The National Honor Society as stated in the national and local by-laws and/or membership selection criteria statement are asked to submit comments regarding those behaviors. Positive faculty comments are also solicited. Students with more than one signed negative comment from a faculty member will be subject to review and may be excluded from consideration. Any sophomore excluded from consideration by the provisions described in the previous sentence will become re-eligible for N.H.S. membership during the next nomination period and the infractions(s) that led to the exclusion will be deleted from that student’s new nomination records.
  1. Leadership and Service: Candidates meeting scholarship requirements are invited to submit a Request for Consideration for Membership in the J.W. Mitchell Chapter of the National Honor Society. A written description of the process is given to each candidate for both his/her signature and that of a parent or guardian. A detailed description of the selection process is provided to each candidate at an informational meeting. Parents are invited (not required) to attend this meeting. Requests for Consideration should be completed accurately and completely. Once submitted, no additions or changes may be made.  All information included on this form must be for high school years only, and verification is required. Any student found falsifying information on the form will be immediately dropped from consideration. Requests for Consideration allow the Faculty Council to evaluate each candidate’s leadership, service to school, and service to the community.  Candidates must have evidence of service in both school and community.  Leadership experience must also be evident.
  1. The Society’s Faculty Council reviews all forms that are submitted.  Points are awarded according to a predetermined point system. The membership committee selects new Honor Society members from among those completing Requests for Consideration. Successful candidates will demonstrate excellence in scholarship, service, leadership and character.
  1. New inductees are advised of the Faculty Council’s decision by invitation and are inducted into the National Honor Society.  Candidates not selected are notified by letter, and sophomores maintaining a 3.5 GPA through their junior year will be invited to resubmit a Request for Consideration during the next nomination period.
