The Mitchell High School chapter of the National Honor Society works to encourage its members to do their best in all aspects of life.  Our focus is the four pillars of knowledge, therefore we set goals to promote leadership, strengthen character, pursue scholarship and create a desire to put forth service.  We function as positive role models for our fellow peers and a healthy influence in our community.

Article I
Members are expected to attend all meetings of the club.  If members are not present, written notices are to be submitted to the Secretary or the Advisors.  Failure to turn in the notice will result in an unexcused absence.  Three unexcused absences will result in a written warning.  If a member has five unexcused absences, he/she will be brought in front of the faculty review board for possible dismissal.  A member will be marked tardy if he/she comes in after the meeting is called to order.  Two tardies will equal one unexcused absence.

Article II
Meetings for the entire club will be held during the first and third week of the month, unless otherwise planned in advance by the Advisors and/or officers.  Meetings for the officers will be held during the second and fourth week of the month, unless otherwise planned in advance.

Article III
Any Mitchell NHS member interested in running for an officer position must be a member in good standing. The members will elect the officers for the following year.  Elections will take place during the second semester.  New officers will mentor under the current officers until a formal officer installation ceremony.  If a member has a legitimate complaint about an officer it should be taken directly to a chapter advisor.  The complaint will be considered, and if necessary, appropriate action taken.  The MHS chapter of NHS will have eight officers for each school year.  These will consist of a president, three vice presidents, treasurer, secretary, sergeant of arms, and a historian.  Changes concerning officer elections and/or positions may be made by the Advisors and officers.

Article IV
Dues will be five dollars for the year.  If a member is in need of financial assistance, see an advisor.  If a member does not pay the fee by the meeting after it is mentioned to be due, they will be on probation until their due is paid.  New members must purchase a club shirt, and current members must keep their shirts looking presentable.  An official NHS T-shirt or polo must also be worn to all club meetings.

Article V
Membership in the National Honor Society is a privilege, not a right.  Members are expected to participate in NHS activities and be active in the chapter’s business.  Members will be selected annually by a defined process and may be dismissed from the group for specified reasons in conflict with the principles of the National Honor Society or with the bylaws. Participation will be considered at the end of the school year when scholarships are determined.

Article VI
Members are required to complete ten hours of community service per semester.  The first ten-hour service project will be due the first meeting in December. The second semester community service hours will be due at a determined date, which will be announced and posted.  Members are responsible for completing four hours of tutoring per semester, all of which must be in academic subjects.  In addition, participation in two NHS group projects per year is required. The advisors must approve community service and tutoring activities in advance. Hours completed during the summer can count toward the first semester requirement only.  (See the Community Service page on this site for more FAQs.)

Article VII
If a member is in violation of any of the NHS regulations, penalties will be enforced.  These consequences include, but are not limited to: fines, probation, extra service hours, written assignments, publicly read written apology and/or dismissal.

Article VIII
Chapter bylaws will be written or reviewed in a committee made up of officers and representatives as well as advisors.  The new bylaws must be approved by a two-thirds vote of the committee.  If the bylaws pass the committee, the entire chapter will vote on them.  Two-thirds of the chapter must vote to institute the bylaws before they will be ratified.  The faculty council and administration must give final approval of the bylaws, which will go into effect immediately following the adjournment of the meeting.

Article IX
NHS information will be posted on the NHS website and on the TV scroll. In addition, other forms of communication may be used (FaceBook, Remind 101, etc.)  The members will be held responsible for knowing the posted information.

Article X
A faculty review board will meet any member in violation of NHS or school rules.
