Stampede Editorial Policies

The Stampede yearbook staff is responsible for creating an annual publication that becomes the permanent record of the school and the school population we serve. The publication we create will serve as a record/history book, memory book, business venture, classroom laboratory and public relations tool for the district. The Stampede staff adheres to the NSPA Code of Ethics. The Stampede functions as a public forum, and editors are responsible for all content decisions.

In the event of a death of a student or staff member during the school year, The Stampede will provide a quarter page ad at no cost to the family. This dedication will be placed in the ads or index section, depending on the date of death. It will include the name of the deceased, a picture of the person (if available), and the class year, or years the person worked at JWMHS. If the family or friends would like more than a quarter page (provided there is room in the book), they must pay the monetary difference between the quarter page and the size desired. The family may help design the ad and provide additional photos. The latest a memorial ad can be submitted is February 1. In the event that this deadline cannot be met, the family may opt to include the ad in a future volume of The Stampede. If the death occurred during the commission of a crime, The Stampede reserves the right to exclude the memorial ad.

The list of students who opt out of all media, including the yearbook, in the Parental Bill of Rights will be pulled at the halfway point of the first quarter. Parents will be contacted to ensure that they DO NOT wish their child to be photographed for the yearbook. The yearbook staff will do their best to ensure that these students will not be photographed or identified in the yearbook in any way. However, including a photo of their likeness may be unavoidable if they are in a large crowd at a pep rally, classroom, assembly or sporting event, etc. Their names will not be used.

The yearbook staff will pull a list of preferred names at the halfway point of the first quarter. These names will be used consistently throughout the yearbook in place of the students’ legal names. If students have not specified a preferred name, their legal first and last name will be used to identify them in the yearbook. In addition, we will use he/him or she/her pronouns for students according to their gender in the Demographics tab of MyStudent. If a parent or guardian wishes for alternative pronouns to be used for their student, they must make this request in writing to the principal and yearbook adviser.
