On Friday at the JWMHS Football game against Gulf High School we had the privilege of beginning a yearlong celebration of 25 years of excellence at J.W. Mitchell High School. We will be recognizing those who have helped develop our legacy, and chart a course for the next 25 years. Our young school is writing it’s own history, and we are proud of those who have helped us establish ourselves as a place where students, staff, families and volunteers believe in the culture of excellence. As Mustangs we collectively believe that we are Empowered by Community, Driven by Integrity, and Dedicated to Excellence.
To honor the spirit of our values, we began a tradition of recognizing community members who have given of themselves in an extraordinary way. In or north endzone of the field at the JWMHS Stadium, a new 775 pound granite monument now presides permanently over this athletic complex. It is known as the Pillar of the Community.
This beautiful piece will serve as a constant reminder to all Mustangs that the most fulfilling life is one dedicated to improving the lives of those around them. Atop that piece of granite is a cast bronze camera that pays homage to the namesake and first recipient of the Pillar of the Community Award.
The first recipient of this Award is Tom “Pops” Mewborn.
On Friday, we honored a man, and celebrated a legacy that has touched us all—a legacy that will continue to inspire generations to come. Tom “Pops” Mewborn is a man whose unwavering dedication, kindness, and community spirit have made him a true pillar of our community.
From the very first moment Pops attended JWMHS games, it was evident that he was no ordinary spectator or grandfather. What began as a simple hobby soon blossomed into a profound passion—a passion that would leave an indelible mark on our schools and the lives of countless families. For over a decade, Pops has been on the sidelines, not just capturing moments but creating memories. Through the lens of his camera, he has immortalized the joy, triumph, and spirit of the students of JWMHS, GHS, and RRHS. These are not just photographs; they are cherished treasures, preserved by a master who has honed his craft with precision and love.
Pops saw what others might have missed—the fleeting moments of victory, the quiet determination, the exuberant celebrations. He understood, even if he would never boast of it, that true greatness lies not in personal accolades but in serving others. With every click of his camera, he has given families the gift of memories—moments they might never have been able to witness as they cheered from the stands. Pops has shown us that selflessness and service are the true measures of a life well-lived.
This monument should stand as a beacon of the values Pops embodies: dedication, kindness, and an unyielding commitment to our community. Let it remind us all of the power of being part of something greater than ourselves—of supporting one another, being a good neighbor, and striving for excellence in everything we do.
In honoring Pops, we also renew our commitment to carrying forward his legacy. We pledge to uphold the vision he captured through his camera lens—a vision of a community bound together by selflessness, kindness, and service. Let us never forget the profound impact one individual can have when they choose to live a life dedicated to others.
Thank you, Pops, for all you have given to the communities of RRHS, GHS, and JWMHS, and to the countless students and families you have touched with your work. Your spirit will forever be woven into the fabric of this community. Every time our athletes take the field, they will be reminded of your contributions, and your legacy will continue to inspire us all to strive for excellence.
You are, indeed, a pillar of this community, and we are eternally grateful for the many years of service and love you have given us.
