Special Activities

HOSA–The Health Occupations Students of America Club is a required part of this academy. This club provides many leadership opportunities for the students as well as participation in regional ad state competitions. We have also raised thousands of dollars for local and regional charity events, such as The Susan G Komen Foundation, National Suicide Prevention, The American Heart Association, The American Cancer Society and many more.

Community Service Hours–The students are required to obtain 100 hours (which count for their Bright Future Community Service hous as well) in a medically related area. Students have volunteered in local area hospitals, dental offices, medical offices, veterinarian offices, medically related events such as Hike for Hospice and many more places/events.

During the course of their years at Mitchell High School, they will have the opportunity to participate in Health Screenings at local elementary and middle schools. They will have the chance to work with staff nurses and assistants in providing health screenings (height, weight, hearing and vision testing). These facilities have grown to rely and trust in us to provide these services. This also gives the students an opportunity to work with other health care providers in the community.

Health Care Career Job Shadowing–During the summer of the student’s junior to senior year, they are expected to do a job shadowing. This is to help the students visualize the “real world” of what health care professionals really do besides patient care including the paperwork, charting, dealing with patient’s family and friends, etc. They are required to do a 40 hour job shadowing which may be split up in an manner. Students are given instruction on how to do this at the end of their junior year. This is also a required part of the academy.
